Key customer awards Alfa Laval sustainability recognition for plate heat exchanger technology

BDR Thermea Group is a leading European manufacturer of thermal comfort solutions, with brands that include Baxi, De Dietrich, Remeha. They recently recognized Alfa Laval for key contributions to BDR Thermea’s vision of bringing about a carbon-zero future. This certification is the first of its kind that Alfa Laval have received, and it confirms the important role that Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers play in the sustainability of the company’s solutions.

BDR Thermea manufactures commercial and residential heating and cooling solutions, with climate comfort products for everything from small homes to huge, multi-storey buildings. They have an extensive product range that includes heat pumps, boilers and co-generation solutions. Alfa Laval is a vital partner to BDR Thermea’s business, with a close relationship based on mutual collaboration.

“We have been supplying heat exchangers to the brands that make up today’s BDR Thermea Group for multiple decades,” says Federico Lechi, a Key Account Manager in Alfa Laval’s Business Unit Brazed and Fusion Bonded Heat Exchangers. “For example, today Alfa Laval CB10, CB16 and CB18, from our extra-small range, are critical components for BDR Thermea’s boilers. You will also find our Alfa Laval AC30 and AC40 model heat exchangers in their heat pumps.”

Sharing a commitment to sustainability

Creating solutions for a zero-carbon future is the core of BDR Thermea’s business, and they have therefore established a thorough sustainability review process for all of their key suppliers. Developed in partnership with the sustainability ratings organization EcoVadis, the evaluation platform covers 21 criteria across four themes of the environment, fair labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.

“Alfa Laval’s performance across all criteria showed BDR Thermea that we share their commitment, which is why they have chosen our company for this award,” says Federico Lechi. “This recognizes not only the sustainability actions we have taken as a company, but also how important our technologies are to their products. With optimized heat exchangers, BDR Thermea can increase the thermal efficiency of their solutions, leading to decreased energy consumption and a reduced carbon footprint for the end-user.”

In addition to supplying solutions, Alfa Laval takes an active part in strategic meetings with BDR Thermea’s research and development organization. The two companies exchange information on technological innovations and market trends, with a substantial focus on today’s sustainability issues.

“Alfa Laval’s extensive experience with natural refrigerants has given us unique insight into their use in heating and cooling systems,” explains Federico Lechi. “This has often been on the agenda in our work with BDR Thermea, and our input has been valuable in driving their decisions on new development.”

A socially distanced presentation

Due to the current limitations of COVID-19, BDR Thermea arranged for a conference call to congratulate Alfa Laval on the recognition and present them with a certificate. Two Directors from BDR Thermea were on hand for the occasion, along with Fredrik Ekström, President for Business Unit Brazed & Fusion Bonded Heat Exchangers at Alfa Laval.

“As the first such recognition that Alfa Laval have received, this was obviously a very proud moment for everyone involved,” Fredrik Ekström says. “It has reaffirmed that for Alfa Laval, ‘sustainability’ is not merely part of a green marketing campaign, but something that is inherent to the ways that we as a company act in the market, and something that is built in to the products that we deliver to our customers.”
